17 Common Bedroom Decor Mistakes That Cheapen Your Space
If you’re a home decor enthusiast, I bet you’re always looking to improve your home! In this post I’m going to talk about 17 decor mistakes that you will commonly find in bedrooms. Fixing or avoiding these decor mistakes will certainly improve the look of your bedroom, giving you the high-end luxe feel!
1. Matching Furniture Sets
No matter how convenient, buying matching furniture sets is one of the most common mistakes I often see a an interior designer in people’s homes. They are very impersonal, lack decor aspects and generally feel cold and uninviting. Instead, having an intentional and a good mix of furniture pieces in the bedroom really makes the space look timeless and feel warm, inviting by bringing in a personal touch.
2. Overly Patterned and Gaudy Curtains
Drapery in the bedroom is a great design element that enhances the look. However, if the bedroom has overly colorful and patterned curtains it easily becomes an eyesore. To achieve the designer look it is important to stay in the neutral color palette when choosing drapery for a bedroom.
3. Clashing or Uncoordinated Bedspread
Another common decor mistake I see in homes is incorrect mix of colors and patterns in the bedding. Bedding is one of the most important design aspects that make or break the entire look of the bedroom. It is also the toughest one to crack considering the number of design decisions that need to be made. The color of the bedspreads, shams, throw blankets, throw pillows, the list goes on. If you’re looking for easier ways to set up the bed, I like to stick to the basic design strategy - start with a white or neutral base (fitted sheet, pillow cases, duvet and the cover), add a quilt with a popup color and choose 2 to 3 throw pillows with covers from the same color family as the quilt.
4. Cluttered Nightstand or Dresser
An easy way to make progress towards getting the designer look in your bedroom is to declutter. A messy furniture surface is hardly a good sight! Start by clearing out the nightstands, dressers and any other accent piece you have in the bedroom with a surface. Adding organizers to the nightstand drawers or the dressers can encourage you to keep things neatly and provide a nice starting point for a beautiful bedroom.
5. Lack Of Nightstand Decor
If you have a nightstand in your bedroom know that it is a great piece to add decor elements. When aiming for a high-end or a designer look never undermine the importance of a surface! Furniture pieces like nightstand offer a wonderful opportunity to display decor pieces . Consider adding a vase with faux greenery, a candle, small picture frame, and a table lamp.
6. Inexpensive Looking Lamps
While lamps and nightstands are made for each other, it is important what kind of lamp you choose. The lamps that scream luxury are ironically not the ones that look luxurious. Funky lamp base with shiny metals and over the top designs look cheap and dated. Choose table lamps that have ceramic, stone or clear glass lamp base paired with neutral or white lamp shade. They’re classic, elegant and add the luxe quality to a bedroom.
7. Cool Bulb Temperatures
Just as important as the table lamps are the bulb temperatures installed throughout the bedroom. Be it ceiling lights, recessed lights or table lamps. Warmer bulb temperatures create the cozy ambient effect that is essential in bringing a design look to any space. Make sure the bulbs are Warm or Neutral White and stay away from the Daylight temperatures.
8. Unattractive Throw Pillows
If you look a designer look, your love for throw pillows is a given! While the arrangement of throw pillows on a bed is a relatively easy task, choosing prints for the throw pillow covers is the hardest and the most challenging part of decorating any space, not just a bedroom. When selecting throw pillows or covers for your bedroom remember to stay in the color palette that goes well with the rest of the room. Choose patterns and colors that are not cheap-looking or too distracting. Stay in the neutral family and choose simpler patterns that blend well with the bed and add a touch of elegance.
9. Not-so-cool Laundry Baskets
Functional elements like laundry baskets that are essential for bedrooms are looked past when considering the overall decor. If you too have plastic laundry baskets as shown below, know that it is cheapening the look of your bedroom. Swap it out for wicker or woven baskets that add the elegance and style. It acts as a decor object while being functional!
10. Lack Of Greenery
If your bedroom is lacking greenery of any sort, you are missing out! A small faux plant or stem of florals in a vase elevate the look of your bedroom and adds to the aesthetic. You can add a small vase on the nightstands, a vase on the dresser and/or a tall plant in one of the corners of the room.
11. Ugly Ceiling Lights
As a designer I cannot look past ugly ceiling light fixtures. It is a complete eyesore that adds no decorative value to the bedroom! A typical ceiling light that is common in most households is the boob light. If you too have one of those, no matter how upgraded it looks consider swapping it out for a different light fixture.
12. Dated Bed Frame or Headboards
Another commonly seen design mistake in bedrooms are dated headboards that seem elegant but aren’t and instead cheapen the look. Since bed is the anchoring furniture piece in a bedroom it is important to choose the right bed frame or headboard. Go for a simpler bed frame that is neutral in color - beiges, browns, grey, etc.
13. Improperly Scaled Furniture
The scale of the furniture is one of the easiest aspects to get wrong when decorating a space. If your bedroom isn’t too large and you’re trying to fit in a bigger bed or other furniture piece, this could cheapen the look of your space. Start with putting painters tape in the bedroom when shopping for furniture to get an idea of placement and scale. Improperly scaled furniture is hard to fix and the only way to do so is by replacing it.
14. No Drapery For Window Treatments
I absolutely love a good window treatment and cannot emphasize on the importance enough! Especially if you’re aiming for a designer look for your bedroom, do not miss the window treatments. Instead of simply having blinds or shades, consider adding drapes. The tall and elegant features of drapes enhances the bedroom while looking stylish and sophisticated. Remember to go for simpler curtains with minimal pattern and warm neutral or neutral colors.
15. Rugless Bedroom
I don’t think I need to sell you on rugs considering you’re reading this blog post :)
Rugs in bedrooms, especially if you have carpet on the floor, can be debatable but personally I love them! They anchor the bed and other pieces around. If you have a wooden flooring, a rug is a must and if you have a carpet, I would still insist. A rugless bedroom looks afloat, missing a major design element.
16. Absence Of Accent Furniture Pieces
Just because it’s a bedroom doesn’t mean a bed and a pair of nightstands are the only furniture items you put in the space. A bench, accent chairs, dresser are additional pieces you can add to the room. If you have a bedroom that can accommodate any of these, you must! These pieces not only offer more seating capacity but also look very beautiful and complete the bedroom decor.
17. Unimpressive Dark Walls
When a bedroom has an accent wall treatment it certainly adds character to the space. However if it’s a dark bright wall it makes the space look smaller, cheap and also restricts other decor decisions. If your bedroom has one such wall, repaint it to match the other walls or simply add a neutral wallpaper. It will not only open up the space but also help you achieve the luxe look you’re going for.
These were 17 commonly found decor mistakes in a bedroom. How many of these did you find yourself nodding in agreement to? :)
