10 Design Takeaways From This Bedroom Makeover

Here's another virtual makeover to inspire you! This time, I worked on a spacious primary bedroom. Read this post to discover 10 design takeaways to consider when redesigning your own bedrooms.

If you’re a new reader, I offer virtual interior design services. Check out the design packages if you’re in the process of designing your space, I’d love to help you!

1. Optimizing Large Spaces

If you’re blessed with a large space and not sure how to optimize it, trust me when I say it’s a good problem to have! Large spaces have a ton of potential and the easiest way to optimize one is by creating multiple zones.

In this bedroom, I placed the bed (as it was in the BEFORE) in the center of the room but added a 3-seater couch along the windows and a dresser on the opposite wall. You can also add a writing desk or a chaise lounge to suit your needs.

2. Scale Of The Furniture & Decor

Minding the scale of furniture is crucial for any space. A small rug in a large room or oversized furniture in a small area creates an imbalance, making the space feel either visually empty or overly packed.

For instance, in this bedroom, the previous rug size was appropriate, but the TV unit was too small for the TV set. Additionally, the picture frames scattered throughout the room were also too small. In the redesign, I placed a larger TV unit below the TV and chose bigger artwork for the walls. These small changes significantly impact the overall look and feel of the room.

3. Additional Seating

I mentioned how creating multiple zones in a large space is a good way to fill up the room and add more seating. If you’re aiming for a designer look, it’s important to carefully decorate these zones.

In addition to placing a 3-seater couch, I included a side table, a floor lamp and thoughtfully placed throw pillows. These tiny details go a long way in creating a cohesive look while making the room feel warm, inviting and look gorgeous!

4. Headboard & Bedding Style

Goes without saying, the bed is the focal point of any bedroom. In interior design, a focal point is the area or element in a room that immediately draws attention and serves as the centerpiece of the design. Naturally, when designing a bedroom selecting the correct size of the bed and the headboard is crucial.

Since this bedroom is spacious, it could easily fit a king size bed. But the bed was lacking a headboard. A tall headboard in a bedroom is the easiest way to achieve a designer look. Spruce it up with a nice bedding style. I kept it simple by adding 3 throw pillows since it’s a king size bed, a lumbar pillow and a throw blanket.

5. Window Treatments

If you've read my previous posts, you know how much I love using curtains as window treatments. Curtains and drapes instantly soften the look of any design. No matter the size of your space, adding curtains can make a significant difference.

For example, this bedroom originally had blinds on its three windows. By adding curtains, the transformation was remarkable! When selecting colors for curtains, stick to neutrals or warm neutrals. They blend seamlessly with all design styles and remain timeless.

6. Same Nightstands Bring Symmetry

Placing identical nightstands on each side of the bed is an effective way to create a sense of balance and symmetry in your bedroom design. This simple change can enhance the room’s visual appeal!

This bedroom initially had nightstands, but they weren’t identical and were off in scale. By adding identical nightstands and matching lamps, I created a more balanced and harmonious look in the room. Don’t miss this post where I explain in detail how to setup a bedroom.

7. Ceiling Treatment

Ceiling Treatments are my absolute favorite part of designing a makeover! Treatments such as adding beams, shiplaps, or even a simple accent paint on the ceiling have huge design potential and make a great impact, visually.

Since this bedroom was spacious, I wanted to add beams and wood planks throughout. As you can see, this added warmth, draws the eye up and kind of completes the room without being too visually overbearing. If you don’t want the whole shebang, simply paint the ceiling in an accent color that’s neutral and not too saturated.

8. Adding More Furniture

When designing or “filling up” large spaces it’s important to do this thoughtfully. Simply adding random pieces of furniture throughout the room does not do the job. Read point number 5 in this post to understand the different types of furniture you can add in a bedroom to get the designer look.

In this bedroom makeover I placed a bench, identical nightstands, dresser, a couch, and side table. These additions not only fill up the spacious bedroom but also offer more seating, surfaces to add decor elements, not to mention more storage in the form of a dresser.

9. Variety Of Lighting

Lighting is yet another crucial design element that largely dictates a room’s ambience. Not just the type of lighting you choose but the temperature of the bulbs you put in also play a huge role.

A variety of lighting can be added to any room, no matter how big or small. Table lamps, floor lamps, wall scones, picture lights are just some of the common lighting you can add to a space.

I added identical table lamps on the nightstand, identical reading lights, a table lamp on the dresser, and floor lamp next to the couch. These lights are a visual treat and also create a beautiful cozy ambience during the nighttime.

10. Decor Details

A good design is all in the details. The small, thoughtful elements like artwork, picture frames, rug, carefully chosen throw pillows, or cohesive color schemes can significantly elevate a space. Paying attention to the finer points ensures that every aspect of the design contributes to a unified and aesthetically pleasing space.

Notice how swapping the 3 square frames above the bed with 1 rectangular frame, 1 small frame between the windows with 2 large picture frames or opting for a neutral vintage rug made a big difference. The decor pieces seem as if they were always meant to be there and these intentional placements are just perfect to get the designer look!
